TRISTAN VAUTIER CLAIMS HIS SECOND VICTORY OF THE SEASON IN ROUND 3 OF THE

STAR MAZDA CHAMPIONSHIP VISITFLORIDA CUP AT NEW JERSEY MOTORSPORTS PARK

New Jersey Motorsports Park (June 27, 2010) – Frenchman Tristan Vautier claimed his second victory of the 2010 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear driving the #38 Andersen Racing / Moulin TP / Cecibon / Circuit du Laquais Mazda in Round 3 of the VISITFLORIDA Cup at New Jersey Raceway Park.    Starting from the outside of the second row, he took the lead from pole-sitter Conor Daly’s #22 Juncos Racing / INDECK / The College Network / Merchant Services Ltd. Mazda on the opening lap and led all the way to the checkered.  Finishing 2nd – his third podium of the season — after starting 8th in the #18 Team Apex / Wabash Capital Investments Mazda was Brazilian Joao Victory Horto.  Rounding out the top-3 was Norwegian racer Anders ‘The Viking’ Krohn, scoring his third podium of the season in the #47 Andersen Racing / Norse Cutting & Abandonment / Trallfa / Colosseum Mazda.  Krohn was holding tight to second place until the final lap when his gearbox stuck in 6th and Horto was able to pass.

“It’s the end of a long nightmare for me and the Andersen Racing team with a win in the first race and then so much bad luck in one race after another,” says the young driver from Grenoble, France who won the season-opener at Sebring.  “I was able to make a four second gap over Conor by about halfway, but then his tires went off toward the end and I finished seven seconds ahead of Joao.  I has so much emotion crossing the finish line that I almost broke my steering wheel becaue I was so happy.  The Andersen Racing team has worked so hard for this, and all my sponsors who helped make it happen.  And to hold this VISITFLORIDA trophy again makes me feel like we have turned a corner and we can show what a good team we are during the rest of the season.”

In the Expert Series (drivers aged 30-44) Californian Patrick O’Neill crossed the finish line first in class and 15th overall in the #64 JDC Motorsports / O’Neill Construction Mazda.  Leading the Master Series (driver 44 and older) was Puerto Rico native Carlos Conde with an 18th-place finish in his #31 Team GDT / Pronto-GMT / Olympus Securities Mazda.  This is the second in-class victory for both O’Neill and Conde, both of whom won their respective classes in Round 2 at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Rounding out the top-5 was Horto’s Team Apex teammate, Venezuelan racer Jorge Goncalves in the #9 Team Apex / Wabash Capital Investments Mazda.  Brazilian Caio Lara, winner of yesterday’s Race 1 / Round 6, brought his #19 JDC Motorsports / MLD / ATW Mazda home in 6th. MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development Ladder scholarship winner (and 2009 Skip Barber Pro Series Champion) Connor De Phillippi, finished 8th in the #11 JDC Motorsports / MAZDASPEED Motorsports / Skip Barber Mazda.  The lone female racer in the field, colombian Tatiana Calderon, matched her best finish so far this year, scoring a 9th-place finish in the #25 Juncos Racing / Kia Motors Mazda.  Another drive of note came from Ohio native Larry Pegram, a top rider in the AMA SuperBike class making his first-ever start in a Star Mazda Championship race.  After qualifying 21st in the #72 AIM Autosport / Tampa Bay Jaw Surgery / Foremost Insurance Mazda, he moved up to finish 16th overall.

The hard luck award of the day goes to Quebec racer Mikael Grenier who qualified 3rd in the #17 Andersen Racing / Slow Cow / April Super Flow / NAPA Auto Parts / HS Telecom / Desharnais Mazda, but finished 21st, four laps down.

Roberts, who won the Expert Series yesterday driving the #65 Team GDT / General Data Tech Mazda and finished third in class today leads the category with 110 points while Master Series driver Gerry Kraut, who also won yesterday and finished 3rd today in his #55 JDC Motorsports / Dougherty & Co. / Dougherty Funding LLC Mazda also leads his class.

The lead in the VISITFLORIDA battle changed hands between yesterday and today.  With victories in two of the three VISITFLORIDA races held so far, Tristan Vautier leads with 118 points over Anders Krohn and Conor Daly, tied with 110.

BRAZILIAN CAIO LARA DE-RAILS CONOR DALY’S HISTORIC WINNING STREAK WITH HIS

FIRST-EVER STAR MAZDA VICTORY IN RACE 1 / ROUND 6 AT NEW JERSEY MOTORSPORTS PARK

New Jersey Motorsports Park (June 26, 2010) – The Gods of Racing have had their laugh.  The more you talk about a record waiting to be broken, somehow the less likely it becomes.  Starting from the pole for the fourth time this season, Conor Daly – starting from the pole for the fourth time this season — was reasonably expecting to break the all-time Star Mazda Championship win record of four in a row.  Until the green light signaling the traditional Star Mazda standing start, that is.  What the officials saw on TV was both Daly and Vautier, starting side-by-side on the front row, accelerating before the green… which resulted in a drive-through penalty for both drivers that dropped them to the back of the field.

Then there was one of those multi-car, ‘what were they thinking’ melees between several of the top runners, compounded by yet another incident as the re-formed field approached the starter’s stand for a resumption of racing.  Throughout this long full-course yellow, third-season Brazilian racer Caio Lara, driving the #19 JDC Motorsports / MLD / ATW Mazda, was in the lead… a lead he lost when 2nd-place finisher Anders ‘The Viking’ Krohn passed him briefly – and was re-passed in return on the same lap.  And surely he must have been hearing in his headphones about the relentless charge of Conor Daly, a man on a mission who performed racing’s version of kinetic miracles carving his way back up through the field to salvage a podium finish.

The top-finishing driver in the Master/Expert category was Master Series (driver 45 and older) racer Gerry Kraut, who qualified 16th and finished 13th overall in his #55 JDC Motorsports / Dougherty & Co. / Dougherty Funding LLC Mazda.  Leading the charge among the Expert Series racers (drivers 30-44 years old) was Texan J.W. Roberts, who finished 14th overall at the wheel of his #65 Team GDT / General Data Tech Mazda.

“I’m so happy to finally score my first win in Star Mazda and all my thanks to the JDC Motorsports team for giving me a car capable of winning the race,” said Lara, who has scored top-5 finishes in both races at NJMP last season and, by virtue of his victory today, has move up to 5th in the championship with 193 points. “The car was the best is has been all season, and now with the confidence of this win, we must work hard to qualify well tomorrow and try to repeat this outcome.”

Lara has been a consistently fast competitor this year; he has already scored one podium — and finished in the top-10 at every race. Daly remains in the lead with 254 points, four wins, four podiums and two podiums.  Anders Krohn, who started from the pole at the 12 Hours of Sebring season-opener, remains second in the championship with 211 points, two podiums and four top-5 finishes.

Vautier, who started from the front row alongside Daly and suffered the same drive-through penalty- also slashed his way back up through the field in his #38 Andersen Racing / Moulin TP / Cecibon / Circuit du Laquais Mazda to finish 6th.  In between, MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development Ladder driver Connor De Phillippi moved up from 7th on the starting grid to finish 4th in his #11 JDC Motorsports / MAZDASPEED Motorsports / Skip Barber Mazda.  And quick young Quebec racer Mikael Grenier, who started from 6th on the grid in the #17 Andersen Racing / Slow Cow / April Super Flow / NAPA Auto Parts / HS Telecom / Desharnais Mazda, raced his way up to 5th.  Larry Pegram, the AMA SuperBike racer making his 4-wheeled debut in the #72 AIM Autosport / Tampa Bay Jaw Surgery / Foremost Insurance Mazda, started 19th on the grid and finished 17th.

This past weekend saw plenty of heat at the South Jersey tracks of NJMP. On the Thunderbolt course, it was Star Mazda and the USF2000 series showing the way with awesome wheel to wheel racing. There was a number of lead changes, some suprises and disappointments, and oh yes, racing lessons learned. On the Lightning Course all the excitement one could want was of the two wheeled variety, and in the mix but not overlooked was the F1 activities!

Back to the Thunderbolt Course, two wheel championship racer Larry Pegram ran in the Star Mazda,Visit Florida Championship Series, and ran a respectable stint all the while rapidly increasing his learning curve in an entirely different racing venue. As the weekend went along, Pegram’s times got better and one could see confidence and ability growing.

Pre-race prep

Mikeal Grenier patiently sits in-car while final prep work is being done just prior to the first of two races at NJMP on the Thunderbolt Course. The entire garage was abuzz in a calmly chaotic dance of people hustling around each other, parts, pieces, fuel cans, toolboxes, and everything else imaginable, all prepping for the race in front of them.

Making last minute pre-race preparations, Grenier waits in car as the crew tidy’s up some last minute loose ends. The entire paddock had all teams busily doing the same thing to their cars in a calmly chaotic dance around people, parts, fans and tires prepping for the much anticipated Race #1

Andy Lally is the epitome of dedication. As I have watched Andy do what ever it takes to benefit his team, he is ALL IN. There are no questions, hesitations, doubts, as to what he believes in, and commits himself to, period. Like an example of of a person that sold everything he had to buy a precious gem of much value, there is the analogy of Andy Lally.

Andy is more than a dream chaser, he is a man of sound principal, a believer and supporter of what he commits himself to do. Cudo’s to Mom and Pop, you done good, just like we all try to do with our own. Even still, thru a rise to and thru the ranks, Andy has never foregone what has advanced him to where he is today, because he firmly grasps just how fragile and fleeting things can be in the racing world.

I am very proud to be considered as somewhat of a friend to Andy just because of how he carries himself not only as a professional, but as a human being, trying to be a decent human being in a very unstable world in which we live.

The associated photo shows how Andy put a “Perma-Grin” on the face of a true racer (using his own car), after taking  the owner of the McKee Andy is seen in the photo, during a session announcing the “Official” opening of TRG/East at New Jersey Motorsports Park, a world class racing facility, featuring not one, but two, World Class Courses

Lally Lets Loose @NJMP:

Conor Daly has been showing his racing pedigree  lately winning four in a row! Will the reign of power continue this weekend at NJMP on the Thunderbolt course? Daly has been riding a string of tremendous efforts as of late, even being so dominate to lead from the drop of the green to the checkers.

It is not because the other teams are laying down and not trying, Daly’s team just seems to be finding the right little niche, at just the right time, formulating one awesome run at a championship. The action should be as hot as the weather at NJMP this weekend for all those trying to unseat Daly’s run at the Grand prize. The following is a press release from the series, please enjoy.

CONOR DALY DOMINANT WITH FLAG-TO-FLAG WIN FROM THE POLE IN

SECOND ANNUAL STAR MAZDA PIZZA RANCH 100 AT IOWA SPEEDWAY

Iowa Speedway / Newton, Iowa (June 19, 1010) – Before a large and enthusiastic crowd of fans, Indianapolis native Conor Daly, riding the momentum of three straight wins joined an elite group of drivers with his fourth win in a row, leading flag-to-flag from the pole to dominate the second annual Star Mazda Pizza Ranch 100 at the 7/8ths-mile Iowa Speedway.  He extends his lead in the championship battle to 216 points.

The one yellow flag during the 100-lap race had no measurable effect on the race as competitors – even those a lap down — raced three-wide in an oval track battle royal that had IRL officials on their feet and, up in Race Control, 4-time Indy 500 winner Rick Mears smiling like a proud parent.  The only other drivers to win four Star Mazda Championship races in a row all won the championship and went on to stellar motorsports careers, including Joey Hand (1999), Michael McDowell (2004) and Raphael Matos (2005).

Also smiling, and justifiably so, was James Exline, owner of Team Apex, an experienced team in their first season of Star Mazda competition and showing some serious strength as their drivers finished 2nd and 3rd.  Venezuelan driver Jorge Goncalvez, who qualified 5th in the #9 Team Apex / Wabash Capital Investments Mazda brought it home in second place, just a bit over a second behind Daly.  He is now 7th in the championship with 150 points.  Brazilian Joao Victor Horto, who started next to Conor Daly on the front row in his #18 Team Apex / Wabash Capital Investments Mazda, scored a 3rd-place finish.  He moves up from 4th in the chmapionship to third with 165 points. The sole Expert Series (drivers 30 to 44 years old) competitor in the field, Texan J.W. Roberts, scored a top-10 finish in his #65 Team GDT / General Data Tech Mazda.

“It may have looked easy on TV to win that race, but I have to say that it was a struggle,” said Daly.  “The track changed a lot between qualifying and the race, and the car behaved completely differently in turns one and two than it did in three and four.  There were a couple of times there where the car nearly backed out from under me, so it was a battle of concentration and focus to keep the same level of performance for 100 laps.  We had a full-course yellow about mid-way through the race and I saw lots of cars diving for the pits for adjustments and new tires, so it was like an IndyCar race in that respect.  The Juncos Racing team and I worked hard this weekend and we plan to just keep executing like we’re doing now and hope to go into the next race at New Jersey with the same strength we showed here.”

Rounding out the top-5 was Connor De Phillippi, who qualified 7th and drove his #11 JDC Motorsports / MAZDASPEED Motorsports / Skip Barber Mazda to his third top-5 finish of the season.  De Phillippi, the 2009 Skip Barber Pro Series champion, is the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development ladder scholarship winner for 2010 and is racing in the Star Mazda Championship with backing from Mazda and the MAZDASPEED Ladder program.  De Phillippi, 6th in the points going into this race, moves up to 5th with 158 points.  Norwegian racer Anders ‘The Viking’ Krohn, qualified 4th and finished 5th in the #47 Andersen Racing / Norse Cutting & Abandonment / Trallfa / Colosseum Mazda.  Krohn, who was third in the championship before the race, moves up to second with 171 points.  Possibly the most disappointing outcome of the evening was Quebec racer Mikael Grenier, who started from the pole and finished 2nd on Memorial Weekend in the Night Before the 500 at O’Reilly Raceway Park.  He came into the event second in the championship but finished last, 52 laps down, due to contact with the wall.  Grenier was 2nd in the championship before the green flag, but drops to 4th with 163 points.
